Spore: Maxis road to dissapointment

Now when we’re not building websites or marketing them, we like to relax occasionally, something to take our mind of the inner workings of the digital realm. So what better way to stop working on the PC but to play a game on the PC?

Spore was announced, by internet age, so long ago I can’t even remember. It was - and still currently is - hyped as the game to reinvent the genre, push the boundaries and create an such a unique gaming experience that it would change the notion of games forever (insert any other cliches you wish here).

Having just got the game a few days ago - us lucky Aussies got it before the rest of the world - I can say I am now a little dissapointed. Spore was meant to be something truly unique, a merging of so many other successful game concepts which I started playing almost two decades ago (SimCity was always one of my early favourites).

Sadly, the hype just doesn’t live up to expectations, of which mine were all-ready quite lowered given my cynical nature. I won’t go into the graphics or gameplay, after all there are thousands of gaming websites for that. I’ll just say Spore didn’t quite follow through on its lofty promises, and instead seemed to become a product of compromises. Oh well, there’s always something new and ground breaking just around the corner…
