A lot of online marketing focuses around getting visitors now, right now!

The theory is simple enough, get as many people to your website as possible, and hopefully they will convert into paying customers. So how does this relate to SEO? Well, search engine optimisation is not about getting visitors in the door as soon as possible. Good SEO is about building the foundations for long term traffic.

Search engines play one of the most crucial roles for any commercial websites when it comes to acquiring new visitors. Good search engine marketing is about making sure that the flow of new visitors comes naturally, and over an extended amount of time.

Very rarely is any website going to get a huge amount of visitors from an improvement in one particular keyphrase in the SERPS (although it does happen). Rather SEO is about laying the foundations of continual, growing, traffic. It’s very easy to try and go to the “quick fix”, and many black hat SEO’ers do just that. However if you want to establish a long-term presence on the web, good (solid) white hat SEO practices will always rule the roost. When you’re sitting down (not always in front of the computer) and contemplating your SEO strategy, consider this: Do I want to build up a long-term traffic generating system, or do I want to get traffic fast, and then potentially lose all those visitors?

Something to think about.
